We all have mental health issues. Sadly, many of us hide it or tuck it deep inside of us, which leads to damaging our mental health. Depression, anxiety and other mental illnesses develop the more we push it away.

Back in 2016, I tried to take my own life and was hospitalized for a week in a psychiatric unit. I have been struggling with depression for the majority of my life. I would hide my demons from others and try to ignore those negative feelings. Eventually, my depression got severe and pushed me to a boiling point. After my hospitalization, I began my therapeutic journey which lead me to eventually overcoming my depression.
Depression is a leading cause of disability worldwide.
Depression and depressive episodes are classified as mood disorders in DSM-5, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Depression is common risk for suicide. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States for all ages. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death in the world. There also are many other risk factors for suicide such as anxiety, Post-Traumatic Stress disorder, Substance Use disorders, Schizophrenia, Eating disorders, bullying, social isolation, the struggle with sexual identity, and family history of depression.

We may know someone who is struggling or we may be struggling ourselves. In honor of World Suicide Prevention day, here are some important information about Suicide.
